Job Title: Communications Design Coordinator
Pay Grade: $25 per hour, 32 hours a week for 12 weeks (384 hours total)
Effective Date: June 8 – August 31
Due to restrictions from HRSDC funding, candidates must be:
• 15-30 years of age,
• legally able to work in Canada,
• have been in full-time studies in the previous year
• be returning to full time studies in the fall of 2009
The University of British Columbia Sustainability Office is looking for a Communications Design Coordinator for the Summer 2009 term. You are a talented designer interested in using your skills create a better world and evoke meaningful action towards sustainability through communication. You will be responsible for the development and production of internal and external visual communications, including design for print, displays, and web to promote and raise the profile of sustainability at UBC. This is a term position with a focus on fall campaigns for student engagement.
You utilize design strategically and have the ability to foster the creative process in a complex environment. Being naturally adapt at social networking and able to implement such tools – as a part of a larger web initiative under development – is an asset. You understand that design is not all glamour and you’re able to assist with event coordination and project management. Keen attention to detail a necessity. Possessing strong writing skills for an online environment marks the ideal candidate.
Position reports to the Manager Communications and Marketing - Sustainability. Works with wide variety of students, staff and management the campus community.
* Promotional materials for student engagement in sustainability
* Front-end Website design, and minor back-end updates
* Application of Office identity & brand standards
* Presentation design
Education: University or college education related to communications, design, and sustainability or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: -Several years of comprehensive work experience in staff communications.
-Proven experience in print and electronic design and production, research, writing and production; web site production, and organizing events.
-Must demonstrate a passion for sustainability and high quality visual communications
-Exceptional design for print and web.
-Proven skills in Adobe Creative Suite.
-Effective written and oral communications skills, including research, writing and production.
-Excellent interpersonal and organization skills.
-Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, resolve problems, take initiative, exercise good judgment, meet deadlines and accept responsibility.
-Ability to work well in a team environment, and to bring creativity, energy, motivation and enthusiasm to the job.
-Strong computer skills including proficiency in MS Office, graphics, and desktop publishing.
-Three-year history of graphic design skills and experience preferred.
-Event organizing skills preferred.

* Perform gracefully under pressure, meeting both inflexible and shifting deadlines
* Have a willingness to be flexible to project needs (working to deadline requirements)
