SeaChoice: Healthy Choices, Healthy Oceans

SeaChoice, Canada’s most comprehensive sustainable seafood program,
is about solutions for healthy oceans. Five internationally respected
Canadian conservation organizations—Canadian Parks and Wilderness
Society, the David Suzuki Foundation, Ecology Action Center, Living
Oceans Society and Sierra Club British Columbia—formed SeaChoice to help
Canadians take an active role in supporting sustainable fisheries and

Greetings and Happy New Year! Walking the Talk is kicking off 2010 with an exciting announcement. The group has just been formally designated the new United Nations Regional Centre for Expertise for Education on Sustainable Development (RCE) for the British Columbia/North Cascades region. Dr. David Zandvliet of SFU spearheaded this designation on behalf of Walking the Talk, and he received the official certificate of designation from the United Nations University on January 10, 2010.

For an extremely insightful look into the range of challenges that we need to be dealing with, and their interconnections, see this book - its preface here. If we'd learned to use its paradigm back when the original was published, we'd be in far better shape today - and it would still pay to learn this perspective (rather than dealing with the world in disjointed bits and pieces...)

A new book, The Learning Garden: Ecology, Teaching, and Transformation by Veronica Gaylie, (released April 2009) tells the story of building a campus 'Learning Garden' in the Okanagan over a series of cohorts of student teachers and environmental education students. The project began with high ideals, no funding, and a strong desire to do something about the environment. Read more at the Peter Lang website.

The New University Cooperative is please to announce our inaugural 2009 Summer Short Course Program, being held in Nova Scotia, from August 1st to August 28th. The theme of the course is Sustainability and Social Justice; Capacity for Social Transformation.

A full-time, residential program, the Summer Short Course Program combines a range of learning experiences to help students develop the skills and understanding necessary to be involved in movements for social transformation.
