Canadian Youth Climate Coalition - Fall Gr 8-12 Educational Workshops Available

Canadian youth-led non-profit organization the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition (CYCC) is launching a national climate change educational program this fall, and would like to invite BC teachers to participate.

The CYCC has developed a dynamic, interactive workshop that challenges high school students to consider the impacts of climate change on their communities, and to identify their role in becoming part of the solution. As part of the workshop, each student will be asked to consider the kind of Canada they want to be living in 25 years from now.

An interesting study reviewed/posted by the Pacific Institute of Climate Change suggesting that buying green (ie. Green Buildings, Hybrid Cars, etc.) is the latest status symbol. Is this a good thing, or does it just make it OK to indulge in rampant aquistion and consumerism?

Greetings and Happy New Year! Walking the Talk is kicking off 2010 with an exciting announcement. The group has just been formally designated the new United Nations Regional Centre for Expertise for Education on Sustainable Development (RCE) for the British Columbia/North Cascades region. Dr. David Zandvliet of SFU spearheaded this designation on behalf of Walking the Talk, and he received the official certificate of designation from the United Nations University on January 10, 2010.

The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014), offers an opportunity to rethink the manner in which we approach global challenges. Since its international launch in New York on 1st March 2005, the DESD has made considerable progress in terms of concrete activities and actions on the ground. Apart from the regional and national launches, progress has been achieved in both institutional and programmatic areas at international, regional and national levels. However, given the scale and severity of the global challenges we face, much still remains to be done.

For an extremely insightful look into the range of challenges that we need to be dealing with, and their interconnections, see this book - its preface here. If we'd learned to use its paradigm back when the original was published, we'd be in far better shape today - and it would still pay to learn this perspective (rather than dealing with the world in disjointed bits and pieces...)

Climate Action Camps will be held:

1. Toronto, Ontario: October 2-4
2. Montreal, Quebec: October 16-18
3. Halifax, Nova Scotia: October 30-November 1
4. Vancouver, British Columbia: November 6-8

All camps are on weekends - Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. We encourage participants to car pool to the camps & organizers will help link up participants for this purpose.
