Climate change courses for BC civil servants launched by PICS

The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) has today announced the launch of an innovative series of online climate change short courses for civil servants and British Columbians. Throwing the old-fashioned textbook approach out the window, “Climate Insights 101” uses a combination of animation, interviews and click-thrus to engage people on the basic concepts and findings of climate science research.

Canadian Youth Climate Coalition - Fall Gr 8-12 Educational Workshops Available

Canadian youth-led non-profit organization the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition (CYCC) is launching a national climate change educational program this fall, and would like to invite BC teachers to participate.

The CYCC has developed a dynamic, interactive workshop that challenges high school students to consider the impacts of climate change on their communities, and to identify their role in becoming part of the solution. As part of the workshop, each student will be asked to consider the kind of Canada they want to be living in 25 years from now.

New Institute for Environmental Learning approved by SFU Senate

On December 6, 2010, the SFU Senate approved the creation of the new Institute for Environmental Learning (IEL). The key purpose of the Institute is “to develop and support research on environmental learning in communities, schools and post-secondary institutions throughout the Province of British Columbia.”

2010 BC Green Games Winners Announced

The annual BC Green Games, hosted by Science World of British Columbia and BC Hydro, has just announced this year's winning BC schools. There were 94 entries from 32 school districts around the province this year, all vying for a share of the $22500 prize money available. A panel of provincial environmental experts chose the winning school greening project entries, and additional viewer's choice awards were also given out based on online voting.

Climate Action Program Launches New Youth Education Partnership

Victoria, BC –

The Capital Regional District’s Climate Action Program has launched a
new Youth Climate Education Partnership for 2010. The partnership will
work with The BC Sustainable Energy Association, the Sierra Club of
BC, and the BC Campus Climate Network to provide climate change

BC Green Games is a province-wide competition for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12, designed to motivate action, enable sharing and reward and celebrate the green efforts of schools in BC.
The steps to participation include:
1. Register! Sign your team up beginning October 2009.
2. Submit and Share! Starting February 1 and until February 26 2010 submit your team's entry. View projects in the BC Green Games Gallery and vote for your favourite entries until March 15 2010!
3. See the Winners! Chosen by judges and you and announced in April 2010.

Just heard from Hartley Banack that SFU and TRU are collaborating on a new teacher education program in Outdoor and Experiential Education (perhaps fashioned after the one at Queen's, my alma mater).
