2010 BC Green Games Winners Announced

The annual BC Green Games, hosted by Science World of British Columbia and BC Hydro, has just announced this year's winning BC schools. There were 94 entries from 32 school districts around the province this year, all vying for a share of the $22500 prize money available. A panel of provincial environmental experts chose the winning school greening project entries, and additional viewer's choice awards were also given out based on online voting.

Greetings and Happy New Year! Walking the Talk is kicking off 2010 with an exciting announcement. The group has just been formally designated the new United Nations Regional Centre for Expertise for Education on Sustainable Development (RCE) for the British Columbia/North Cascades region. Dr. David Zandvliet of SFU spearheaded this designation on behalf of Walking the Talk, and he received the official certificate of designation from the United Nations University on January 10, 2010.

Climate Action Program Launches New Youth Education Partnership

Victoria, BC –

The Capital Regional District’s Climate Action Program has launched a
new Youth Climate Education Partnership for 2010. The partnership will
work with The BC Sustainable Energy Association, the Sierra Club of
BC, and the BC Campus Climate Network to provide climate change
education to more than 3,600 students across the region.

BC Green Games is a province-wide competition for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12, designed to motivate action, enable sharing and reward and celebrate the green efforts of schools in BC.
The steps to participation include:
1. Register! Sign your team up beginning October 2009.
2. Submit and Share! Starting February 1 and until February 26 2010 submit your team's entry. View projects in the BC Green Games Gallery and vote for your favourite entries until March 15 2010!
3. See the Winners! Chosen by judges and you and announced in April 2010.

BC School Districts: Invitation to apply for an incentive for the instillation of solar hot water sytems

School districts are invited to nominate schools for incentives under the Solar for Schools project of the SolarBC Program. The SolarBC Program provides incentives for the installation of solar hot water systems. SolarBC has received funding for this project from the Province of British Columbia.

The Forum's aim was to inspire education leaders to create a culture of environmental sustainability in all aspects of the K-12 system. The forum brought together both operational and educational perspectives on sustainability.

New Elementary School at SFU to be Ministry of Education's First LEED Gold renovation site

The Province of BC and the Burnaby board of education recently signed an agreement to deliver a new elementary school on Burnaby Mountain, near Simon Fraser University. The elementary school will be the Ministry of Education's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold renovation site.

Looking for ideas on how to organize for environmental action in your school? Check Your Head, a youth driven organization in Vancouver, has published a great resource called Sustainable Schools Action Guide.

Check Your Head launched the Sustainable Schools project in 2007 to connect people working hard on environmental projects in the Vancouver schools. The Youth Climate Leadership Alliance (YCLA) is a Ministry of Environment initiative for British Columbians between the ages of 17 and 28 who are concerned about climate change and want to take direct action to help achieve the province's goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions from 2007 levels by 33 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.

$10.4 Million For New Clean-Technology School Buses

The Province will provide $10.4 million in funding to enable school districts around the province to purchase 86 new clean-diesel school buses, Education Minister Shirley Bond announced today.

“This funding will enable school districts to buy new clean-technology buses that will help improve air quality and protect the health of our students,” said Bond. “This investment supports one of our government’s key priorities, to lead the world in sustainable environmental management.”
