Looking for a hands-on way to conserve the environment? The Lower Mainland Green Team is a group of people from all over the Lower Mainland who get together once a month (sometimes more) to help an environmental group, non-profit organization, charity or city tackle an environmental issue that needs co-operation and teamwork to get done. Some activities include: Pulling invasive plants, planting trees/native plants, riparian restoration, beach/river/lake clean up, harvesting organic fruits/veggies, trail building/maintenance and restoration of wildlife sites.

Suzuki Foundation Releases Scorecard on Controversial VANOC Claim of “Carbon Neutral” Olympics

The David Suzuki Foundation released its report reviewing VANOC’s oft-stated claim that the 2010 Vancouver Olympics will be the first ever carbon neutral Olympics ever staged. While the Suzuki found many things to praise in VANOC’s efforts, including measuring GHC emissions for seven years (from bid to Games), the LEED Gold standard design of venues and the Athletes Village, and other efficiency efforts, Suzuki concludes that the 2010 efforts only amount to a “Bronze” performance.

Greetings and Happy New Year! Walking the Talk is kicking off 2010 with an exciting announcement. The group has just been formally designated the new United Nations Regional Centre for Expertise for Education on Sustainable Development (RCE) for the British Columbia/North Cascades region. Dr. David Zandvliet of SFU spearheaded this designation on behalf of Walking the Talk, and he received the official certificate of designation from the United Nations University on January 10, 2010.

SUSTAINABILITY ACADEMIC STRATEGY Final Report Released

The Sustainability Academic Strategy (SAS) final report has now been released. This detailed report presents a number of important recommendations and models for innovation and collaborative initiatives for sustainability educators. The SAS draft recommendations received unanimous endorsement from the AMS Council at their October 21, 2009 meeting. The SAS final report was submitted to the UBC Executive in October, 2009. A decision is expected on the recommendations by January, 2010.

What is Walking the Talk? A Community Dialogue on Education was held on May 19, 2010 at SFU’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver. Building on the success of the BC Working Group on Sustainability Education summits in 2007 and 2009, the 2010 dialogue marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the Walking the Talk project: being officially chartered as the B.C./North Cascades Regional Centre for Expertise for Education on Sustainable Development (RCE) by the United Nations University.
