The International Education for Sustainable Development Conference will take place at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, November 26-28, 2008 in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.
This conference is a project of the Manitoba Education for Sustainable Development Working Group (MESDWG), which brings together stakeholders from the formal, non-formal, and informal education sectors in an effort to further develop, communicate and promote ESD in Manitoba. The MESDWG was created in 2005 jointly by Learning for a Sustainable Future (a national not for profit organization), Environment Canada (Federal Government), Manitoba Education Citizenship and Youth, and Manitoba Advanced Education and Literacy (Provincial Government). The Science Teachers’ Association of Manitoba (STAM) is a major sponsor and partner in this conference. Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth is a major sponsor of this initiative.
This conference is for leaders of business, NGO’s and government who are involved in reaching their employees and stakeholders about doing business and operating sustainably. The conference is also for educators who wish to embed the life concepts of sustainable development in their curriculums and teachings—STAM, the Science Teachers’ Association of Manitoba is a major partner in this conference.
Through presentations, panels and a showcase, the Conference will highlight effective ESD practice in all sectors and at international, national and local levels. The Conference will also provide a forum to identify gaps, opportunities, and priorities for advancement of ESD.
The Conference will include several special events including an evening at the IMAX Theatre with Lonnie Dupre, polar explorer, writer, photographer, environmentalist and educator; a Showcase of Community Achievements at the Convention Centre; an overview of SEdA the National Sustainability Education Academy; and a reception for those attending the Manitoba Sustainable Development Round Table Awards of Excellence at the Delta Hotel.
Renowned Keynote speakers will include Dr. Charles Hopkins of York University, UNESCO Chair for ESD; Bob Willard, formerly of IBM, speaker and author of The /Business Case for Sustainability/, Dr. Samantha Nutt, a medical doctor who is Founder and Executive Director of War Child Canada, Dr. Wade Davis a noted explorer, anthropologist and ethnobotanist , and Dr. Patrick Moore co-founder of Green Peace and now controversial speaker and consultant about the environment.
Day 1 concurrent theme topics for the conference include: Decision Making Models, Student/Teacher Engagement, Formal Education Issues, Corporate Approaches to Sustainable Development and an overview of the Sustainable Enterprise Academy (SEA) of the Schulich School of Business at York University.
Day 2 concurrent theme topics include: Agriculture and Food Production, Cities of the Future, Seven Generations Principles, Natural Resources, ESD Research and Climate Change. Conference Program attached (attachment 2)
