The Role of the B.C./North Cascades UN-RCE on ESD: What do you think?

Walking the Talk was officially chartered the B.C./North Cascades UN Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development January 10, 2010. Beginning with our Community Dialogue on Education on May 19th at the Wosk Centre, we are in the process of envisioning how the new RCE can walk the talk in education in our region. We want to hear your ideas!

Here is a brief overview of the main principles and goals the United Nations has set out for RCEs.

An interesting study reviewed/posted by the Pacific Institute of Climate Change suggesting that buying green (ie. Green Buildings, Hybrid Cars, etc.) is the latest status symbol. Is this a good thing, or does it just make it OK to indulge in rampant aquistion and consumerism?

Greetings and Happy New Year! Walking the Talk is kicking off 2010 with an exciting announcement. The group has just been formally designated the new United Nations Regional Centre for Expertise for Education on Sustainable Development (RCE) for the British Columbia/North Cascades region. Dr. David Zandvliet of SFU spearheaded this designation on behalf of Walking the Talk, and he received the official certificate of designation from the United Nations University on January 10, 2010.

New UN Report: Mid-Decade review of UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development

The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014), offers an opportunity to rethink the manner in which we approach global challenges. Since its international launch in New York on 1st March 2005, the DESD has made considerable progress in terms of concrete activities and actions on the ground. Apart from the regional and national launches, progress has been achieved in both institutional and programmatic areas at international, regional and national levels. However, given the scale and severity of the global challenges we face, much still remains to be done.

negotiations in Copenhagen!
Set aside some class time between now and November 23rd
so that your students can create eCards with their messages about
climate change. Canada's team of youth delegates—featured here
in their winning video application to UNICEF's Get Reel on Climate
Competition—will take the eCards with them to the Children's Climate
Forum in Copenhagen.

The Green Wave - One School, One Tree, One Gift to Nature

What?

* The Green Wave is a multi-year tree-planting campaign for children and youth around the world leading up to 2010 - the International Year of Biodiversity.
